What Is an Old Mine Cut Diamond? A Guide to the Antique-Inspired Cut

There is something immediately different about an Old Mine Cut diamond.

It doesn't have the perfectly uniform sparkle of a modern brilliant cut. Instead, its larger facets create broader flashes of light, while its softly rounded shape gives the diamond a character that feels distinctly individual.

Originally cut by hand during the Georgian and Victorian eras, Old Mine Cut diamonds belong to another period of jewelry making. Today, their distinctive proportions are being rediscovered — both in antique diamonds and in newly cut natural and lab-grown stones.

At Vivien Frank, it was exactly this combination of old-world character and contemporary design that drew us to the Old Mine Cut.

What Is an Old Mine Cut Diamond?

The Old Mine Cut is an early brilliant-style diamond cut most closely associated with jewelry of the 18th and 19th centuries.

Traditional Old Mine Cut diamonds typically have a softly squared or cushion-like outline, a relatively small table, high crown, deep pavilion and a visible culet at the base of the stone. Because the original diamonds were shaped and faceted by hand rather than according to today's standardized cutting proportions, individual stones could vary considerably. GIA 4Cs

That individuality is an important part of their appeal.

Rather than looking perfectly uniform, an Old Mine Cut has personality.

Why Do Old Mine Cut Diamonds Sparkle Differently?

Modern brilliant cuts are engineered for very precise light return. Old Mine Cuts have larger facets and different proportions, creating a different visual effect.

Instead of many small, sharp flashes, an Old Mine Cut tends to produce broader flashes of light and color. GIA notes that traditional Old Mine Cuts generally display less brilliance but more fire than modern round brilliants. GIA 4Cs

This is sometimes described as a softer or more romantic sparkle.

Old Mine Cuts developed long before modern electric lighting, when diamonds would have been viewed in candlelight and other low-light environments. Their distinctive faceting is particularly beautiful in this softer light. GIA 4Cs

Old Mine Cut vs. Modern Brilliant Cut

Neither cut is inherently "better." They simply create very different personalities.

A modern brilliant diamond is about precision, symmetry and intense light return.

An Old Mine Cut is more about character, larger facets, softer proportions and distinctive flashes of fire.

For someone looking for a perfectly uniform diamond, a modern brilliant may be the natural choice.

For someone drawn to antique jewelry, unusual proportions and stones that don't look quite like everyone else's, an Old Mine Cut can be much more interesting.

Are All Old Mine Cut Diamonds Antique?

No — and this distinction is important.

Original Old Mine Cut diamonds are antique stones, but diamonds are also being cut today using proportions and faceting inspired by historical Old Mine Cuts.

GIA refers to these as modern replicas and notes that contemporary versions can benefit from improved cutting precision and thicker, more durable girdles. GIA 4Cs

This means you can choose between a genuinely antique diamond and a newly cut diamond with an antique-inspired Old Mine appearance.

Can an Old Mine Cut Diamond Be Lab-Grown?

Yes.

"Old Mine Cut" describes the way the diamond is cut, while "lab-grown" describes how the diamond crystal was created.

A lab-grown diamond can therefore be fashioned into an Old Mine-inspired cut just as a mined diamond can.

This creates an interesting combination: the romance and distinctive faceting associated with antique diamonds, interpreted using a modern diamond.

Our 3.02ct Old Mine Cut Diamond Engagement Ring takes exactly this approach.

It features a 3.02ct lab-grown Old Mine Cut diamond with E color and VVS2 clarity, selected for its elongated 1.34 proportions and distinctive character.

Why We Chose an Elongated Old Mine Cut

Traditional Old Mine Cuts are often softly square or cushion-shaped, but we were particularly drawn to a more elongated proportion for this ring.

The 3.02ct diamond measures 10.18 × 7.60 × 5.05 mm, giving it a length-to-width ratio of 1.34.

That elongation changes the personality of the stone.

It retains the softness and larger-facet character associated with an Old Mine Cut while creating a more contemporary silhouette on the hand.

For us, that balance was important.

We didn't want to reproduce an antique ring.

We wanted to take something we love about antique jewelry and make it feel relevant now.

Why We Chose a Collet Setting

The setting was just as important as the diamond.

We chose a collet-style setting, surrounding the diamond with a finely crafted frame of 18K gold rather than using a conventional four- or six-prong solitaire.

Collet settings have historical roots, making them a natural companion to an antique-inspired diamond. But the clean proportions of this particular setting give the ring a much more contemporary feeling.

We also combined white and yellow 18K gold.

White gold surrounds the diamond, while the cup and band are yellow gold. The subtle contrast allows the setting around the stone to recede visually while the yellow gold gives the ring warmth.

The result is neither completely vintage nor completely modern.

And that was intentional.

Is an Old Mine Cut Good for an Engagement Ring?

For someone looking for an engagement ring with individuality, absolutely.

Old Mine Cut diamonds are particularly appealing if you like:

  • antique and vintage-inspired jewelry
  • softer, cushion-like diamond shapes
  • larger, more visible facets
  • distinctive rather than perfectly uniform proportions
  • engagement rings that feel less conventional

The setting is also important. GIA recommends considering a protective setting for genuinely antique Old Mine Cuts because older stones can have particularly thin girdles.

A collet or bezel-style setting can therefore be both an aesthetic and practical choice.

Old Mine Cut vs. Cushion Cut: What's the Difference?

They can look similar at first glance because both can have softly rounded, cushion-like outlines.

But they're not the same.

The Old Mine Cut came first. Modern cushion cuts evolved partly from these earlier cutting styles and generally have more standardized proportions and faceting designed for contemporary brilliance. GIA 4Cs

An Old Mine Cut typically has a higher crown, smaller table, deeper pavilion and more pronounced culet, while its larger facets produce a more distinctive pattern of light.

If you love the shape of a cushion diamond but want something with more antique character, the Old Mine Cut is worth considering.

Why Old Mine Cut Diamonds Feel Modern Again

Perhaps the most interesting thing about Old Mine Cuts is that the individuality of each stone is precisely what makes them feel relevant again.

After years of highly standardized diamond shapes, there is something refreshing about a diamond whose appeal comes from character rather than perfect uniformity.

Old Mine Cuts also work beautifully with contemporary settings. Pairing a historic diamond cut with clean proportions, mixed metals or an unexpected setting can create a ring that feels completely modern.

But for us, an Old Mine Cut isn't interesting simply because it is having a moment.

Good jewelry should outlast trends.

The appeal is the contrast: a historic diamond cut interpreted through contemporary jewelry design.

And that's something we think will remain beautiful long after the trend has moved on.
